Portugal
Portugal was ruled under a dictatorship for nearly 50 years in the 20th century. This was a season with very little religious freedom. Democracy was restored in 1974. Despite greater religious and political freedom since 1975, many people are still bound up in old traditions of paganism and the occult. Some reports say that up to 90% of the population consults spiritist mediums for advice. Secular humanism and materialism are also major influences in Portuguese culture. MB Mission workers serve several church plants in partnership with the Association of Mennonite Brethren in Portugal. Our primary area of mission in Portugal is church planting in the Lisbon area within the Association of Mennonite Brethren in Portugal and in partnership with LOGOS International.
Please pray:
- That God will continue to give Otto and Marjorie Ekk strength, joy, vision and favor as they serve
- That the Portuguese church will raise up and send out missionaries to the Portuguese-speaking world, and to many other nations
- That the Gospel of Jesus Christ will penetrate the hearts and minds of many people in Portugal
- That Portuguese believers will have a transformational impact on their neighborhoods and their nation
