Billboard Jesus

“Jesus is hip!” “Jesus is cool!” “I did it for you!”  In the past several months billboards have been erected all over the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, plastered with a picture of Jesus and these intriguing messages. The billboards have drawn a tremendous amount of attention amongst the citizens of Guadalajara, and especially the youth. Some speculate that this is merely a publicity stint to sell a new brand called “Jesus” for skaters. Citizens continue to ask who would spend thousands of dollars on billboards such as these, and more importantly, why?

The billboards aren’t a marketing scheme to sell skating gear. Instead, a group of believers have spearheaded an outreach that they envision reaching the city and beyond for Jesus. Trever Godard of MB Mission’s Matthew Team made this discovery when he was invited to attend a meeting that revealed the secret. What he learned was a huge encouragement.

Around 300 Mexican pastors and leaders blessed this vision and committed to pray, fast, and work for the salvation and discipleship of thousands of Mexican youth. This city has never experienced a revival or movement of God. Most say it is because there has never been unity among the believers, and especially among the pastors. It is better known for its failed campaigns, jealousy, critical and pessimistic spirits, and small struggling churches. Nightclubs and casinos are growing and thriving. This movement shows that unity is happening. God is doing a great work in Guadalajara. He is bringing revival into the hearts of young and old.

God is already up to something. Recently the Matthew Team attended a concert by a well-known Mexican Christian artist. To their surprise and delight, the concert was sold out! Over 10 000 people came to worship Jesus. The creators of the Jesus campaign have planned a city-wide celebration that will take place in December. They’re praying to fill all 70 000 seats in the soccer stadium. Pray that God would move in the hearts of those in attendance and that His spirit would reach beyond the stadium and sweep the streets of Guadalajara.

“Then this city will bring me renown, joy, praise and honor before all the nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it.” – Jeremiah 33:9
