Bringing Life to a Community
Samuel was lifeless when he was first brought to Bon Berger clinic by his distressed mother Patricia. The situation appeared bleak for this young child who had cerebral malaria, a sickness that frequently kills children in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Patricia and Samuel were followed to the clinic by their extended family, who were certain that it was too late for anything to be done to help Samuel. They had already arranged to have a casket made so that Samuel could be buried, and they called into the clinic, “The child is dead. Bring him back out. He’s dead. We need to bury him.”
“Just a minute,” Dr. Delphin called back out to them. “Maybe we can do something.”
As Samuel’s family mourned outside the clinic, work was being done inside the clinic to revive Samuel by providing him with the care that he needed in order to survive. They managed to resuscitate him, and by the next day Samuel was already up on his feet again!
Samuel’s quick recovery was seen as a miracle in this extremely poor neighborhood, where the mortality rate is particularly high among children. In this community, one can’t walk more than two or three roads without coming across a family who is mourning a child who has just died. This is often due to malaria or infectious disease.
Bon Berger serves the poorest of the poor in the city of Kinshasa. The families in this neighborhood struggle to afford the costs of health care, so the staff at Bon Berger often offer initial care for free.
This community is seeing Jesus at work through the Christ-filled doctors and nurses who serve at Bon Berger. They are a witness of God’s love and healing in this neighborhood. Praise God for the excellent health care that is being offered, and pray that many lives in this community will be transformed through the ministry of Bon Berger.
When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. – Luke 14:13-14
