Cultivating the Divine
“Would we dare to take the risk, at the beginning of our day, to ask God for divine appointments? We might have an agenda – we might have a dozen things on our plate – but if we take this risk, I believe God’s going to show up and blow us away!”
Rob Griffioen speaks passionately about how God has been urging himself and wife Judy to live according to God’s Kingdom agenda. Throughout their ministry with Operation 2nd Wave (O2W) in Phuket, Thailand, the Griffieons have made it a priority to start their day by asking God for divine appointments. And as they’ve discovered, God does not disappoint.
Judy has learned that when she surrenders her plans for the day to God, He accomplishes more than she ever could alone. “I love being in the audience, watching God transform lives! It was never about me – it’s all about God.” On more than one occasion, the Griffioens have seen God orchestrate divine appointments between new Christians and non believers in their very own living room. These appointments have resulted in gospel presentations and transformed lives!
Rob recalls the gravity of impact a divine appoint has – when we’re open to it. After taking part in an annual team retreat north of Phuket, the Griffioens sensed that God had something for them in that area, so they stayed overnight in a guest house. When they awoke the next morning they prayed that God would order their day, give them divine appointments, and show them who he wanted them to connect with. While eating breakfast they overheard an English speaking couple talking on the phone. The man looked familiar to Rob. It turned out that he had seen him at a tsunami relief camp in 2005. They were Al and Karen from Ontario, who, they discovered, had spent six months of the year for the past 14 years in Thailand.
The Griffioen’s saw God’s divine hand in this meeting when they learned that Al and Karen had connections to people who could be a strong resource to them. Through the Canadian couple, Rob and Judy met Bia, a Thai Christian worker who has since become a fundamental part of their lives. This relationship has opened a huge new chapter in their ministry as Bia works closely alongside the team.
Asking for divine appointments is risky, because God will deliver. It means we have to be flexible. Do you dare to allow God to reorder your day? Do you dare to give Him control over the things you need to accomplish? Divine appointments don’t happen on our schedule; they happen on God’s. Whose agenda are you following?
