New Generation

Armed robbery. Theft. Guns for hire. Drive by shootings. Family violence. The city of Piura is a dangerous place to live.

Missionaries Otto and Lidia Funk are involved in church planting and leadership training in Piura, Peru. They live and serve in a society that is full of brokenness and hurt. With few positive examples to follow, the younger generation is lost and it can seem like there is little hope for change. A few recent incidents reminded Otto and Lidia of this reality.

When Martirez, one of the young leaders in the church, was walking some teenagers home after a youth program, he was robbed and beaten with a rock. He lost consciousness and a lot of blood during this attack.

Deyci is a girl from a native tribe in the rainforest who lives with Otto and Lidia and is studying to be a nurse. She was robbed in a park in front of their house in the middle of the day.

These types of incidents are not uncommon in Piura, but Otto and Lidia are choosing not to live in fear. They believe that God is in control and are praying that He will restore this lost generation.

Praise God for the strength, peace, love, and hope that He gives to Otto and Lidia in each day. Pray that God will raise up a new generation of servant leaders who are filled with passion, vision, and focus.

I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Then they will follow My decrees and be careful to keep My laws. They will be My people, and I will be their God. – Ezekiel 11:19-20
