Marques was the best student in high school. But he couldn’t afford university...
And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.Micah 6:8
Discipling leaders is one of the greatest needs of churches worldwide. Whether training to become school teachers, church pastors, or community health workers, many young adults are filled with passion and vision to transform their communities.
But students lack opportunities we take for granted in North America. Books, courses, mentors and internships are scarce in places where leaders are needed most, like Portugal.
Meet Marques Mente. A graduate of the Portuguese Bible Institute, he is now the pastor of Loures MB Church! Getting to this point has not been easy for Marques. At age 9, his family immigrated to Portugal from Angola, Africa. His family was very poor, yet it was obvious he had leadership qualities.
Marques was a great student in high school and had big dreams for the future. His principal called him “the best student we have in our school.”
When MB Mission workers Otto and Marjorie Ekk met Marques, they encouraged him to study at the Bible institute. But there was no doubt; he couldn’t afford university. He was shocked when, with their help, he received a scholarship! His professors were impressed by this passionate, young leader.
Your support can transform the life of a young adult like Marques.
Here’s how you can help:
$25 a month sends two students to a college like Mennonite Brethren Junior College in India. This covers a full year’s tuition in Christian education.
$50 covers an intensive 3-day teacher training course offered by local churches in Tembo, DR Congo.
$150 provides a leadership scholarship for a qualified and gifted young adult in a country like Portugal.
$500 provides a full year of peace and reconciliation studies for a student in a war-torn country like DR Congo. Only Christ’s forgiveness can break the cycle of violence.
