Hearts of Compassion

Ernastes listened attentively as the gospel story was shared with the children around the campfire. He snuggled up to ACTION participant Janelle Hume, constantly smiling up at her, hungry for affirmation.

Janelle's heart overflowed with joy as she looked down at Ernastes. This little boy who was normally disruptive and out of control was now sitting peacefully as he heard the story of Jesus. It was incredible to see the change in Ernastes. Janelle was reminded of Jesus’ words about having faith like a child as she saw the purity and innocence of Ernastes’ desire to be loved.

The ACTION team to Lithuania was serving at a children’s camp by helping with games, teaching English lessons, and helping out the camp counselors. Some of the children at the camp came from broken homes and were extremely difficult to handle most of the time, but this night the team got to see a different side of these children. As God worked in the hearts of these “tough” kids, compassion and love flowed out of their hearts and they were a blessing to others.

Later that night, not long after Janelle had seen the change in Ernastes, she again saw how God was transforming the hearts of these Lithuanian children. During the worship time, another little boy Valentas came up to her and put his arm around shoulder. “You OK?” he asked in broken English. He had seen the tears in her eyes as she worshipped God, and was concerned because she was standing alone.

Through tears of joy, Janelle responded that she was fine, just very happy. Valentas smiled at her and rubbed her back before going back to play. Janelle was filled with even more joy as she saw the compassion of this young boy who had been one of the most difficult children to deal with at a previous camp.

This night was a reminder to Janelle that each child is a gift and is dearly loved by God. Ernastes and Valentas both come from difficult home situations, but God is working in their hearts and lives to draw them to Himself. God used these children to bless Janelle and to show her that He could change their hearts and lives.

Pray for Ernastes, Valentas, and for each of the children who attended the camps put on by this ACTION team. Praise God for His everlasting love for them, and pray that this love will change their lives! Pray that God will raise up a new generation of Lithuanians who are passionate about following Jesus.

"I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes a little child like this in My name welcomes Me.” – Matthew 18:3-5
